Toshiki Yagisawa

Born in Fukushima in 1983, Toshiki Yagisawa is an artist based in Gunma, Japan.

Working with diverse materials and methods, including wood carving, ceramics, 3D printing, and repurposed objects, he creates things that feel familiar yet have never existed anywhere.

At the heart of his practice is Fictional Vernacular Art: the idea of an imagined vernacular culture. He envisions objects that seem to have emerged naturally from places and ways of life that never existed, as though they had been used for generations. In these objects, nostalgia for a past that never was coexists with a sense of familiarity with a future yet to be seen.

In his wood sculpture series “Phantom,” he transforms everyday motifs such as dogs and plants into sculptures, leaving the grain, knots, cracks, and carving marks visible. In other works, he rearranges the functions and contexts of existing objects, reconsidering the relationship between use and meaning.

Through these works, he explores the boundaries between past and future, craft and industrial products, everyday objects and sculpture.

He is the founder of New Scale, a contemporary culture platform.
